A Review of Carroll Quigley's Viewpoints on Civilizations

Abstract: In the
Evolution of Civilizations and Tragedy and Hope, Carroll Quigley, a famous
American historian, finds a historical analytical tool which emphasizes the
relations among man, culture and environment but centered on instrument of
expansion and its institutionalization, In such terms, Quigley explains the rise
and decline of civilizations and refines the process into seven stages, i.e. mixture, gestation, expansion, conflict, universal empire and invasion. Taking
his analyses on Western civilization as an example, this article tries to draw
the outline of Quigley's quintessential viewpoints on civilizations and
summarize his success and failure.
